Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet
A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.
I think a lot of us have seen videos comparing Bitcoin now to how Email was in the past. It was a complicated mess. Not that Bitcoin is as complicated anymore, but it has a lot of room to become more user friendly. What sort of things would make it easier to buy/sell goods and services. Mobile Payments: If walking into a brick and mortar store, using NFC on your phone for payment seems really simple and convenient. It would be nice to have an app like Samsung pay where you can swipe your card up and pay using NFC. Right now, opening an app, selecting the make payment, taking a picture of the QR code, confirming, maybe 2fa seems like a lot of hoops to go through to buy a coffee (when the time comes). Any way to stream line this? PC Payments: Is relatively straight forward, a matter of copying and pasting (with 2fa). Still a lot of hoops to go through if you compare it to something like Amazon's one click pay. Any solutions to make PC payments easier? Addresses: I don't think I've met anyone that feels BTC wallet addresses are comfortable. 99% of people probably copy and paste their addresses. Would it be possible in the future to simplify this? for example [John_[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) I heard a company called UnstoppableDomains were trying to do this, I don't know how it's progressing though. I'd love to here what you guys think would make Bitcoin easier to use.
After my last post in regards to using transferwise here, I've received a bunch more dm's requesting help with bitcoin payments. Bitcoin is one of those things that is only as complicated as you let it be. For this reason I like to recommend coinbase to folks that are just getting started. Coinbase is a crypto platform with full android and ios support available. It's fairly quick and simple to get things setup, and most people are up and running in just a few minutes.
The only other piece of information you require is Monica's bitcoin address and the amount to send. Be sure to confirm this with Monica before sending payments, as this information can change.
Using bitcoin is nice because the payments are pretty quick, and you can save a lot of money in fees in the long run by doing so. I plan on breaking this down into an imgur tutorial in the next few days, but I'm hoping this will help some folks in the meantime.
I've not yet bought anything online using bitcoin. It all seems a bit complicated, and I worry about doing something wrong, and being scammed/losing money. Question is; are there any ways/apps which simplifies the whole process, from buying bitcoin, only paying % of bitcoin for purchase. Can I pay with my credit card and the whole process of payment for coin and payment of purchase to seller, is done for you???
PSA: Don't download the iOS update for Blockchain.info wallet that was put up today. There's a bug that makes Bitcoin payments more difficult.
(Note: It's my opinion not to download this update, like I did. I wish I didn't.) Upon updating the app, when you click "Pay With Bitcoin" links that are inside of things like Gyft (which uses BitPay), then it results in the payment amount NOT being brought over into the app. Only the payment address gets brought over. The payment amount stays listed as zero BTC, when in the past the payment amount would get pasted in. As of now you need to memorize the payment amount exactly or somehow copy and paste it into the Blockchain app. In my opinion please don't download the update that came out today. What features do you appreciate when making Bitcoin payments on a website?
This might be a bit off-topic for the sub, but I'm implementing Bitcoin payments for a website, and I don't really use Bitcoin myself. I'd like to know what features "real" Bitcoin users appreciate in a site that has a Bitcoin payment method. Are there things that some sites do that are particularly helpful/annoying? As it stands I figure I'll need at least:
The bitcoin address displayed clearly
A QR code for users with mobile wallets
Links using Bitcoin URLs for clients that support them
A "copy address to clipboard" button
Details of the original (USD) amount, estimated exchange rate, and bitcoin amount displayed clearly
Instructional text for people new to Bitcoin
Beyond that, I can't think of anything else to make the payment experience better, but I'd like to know what you think. This particular use case is for a deposit/withdraw style system, similar to a PSN or XBox Live account. There is no shopping cart or checkout feature. Thanks. EDIT: Added more info about the specific use case, and a bullet point about displaying the conversion information.
