Video card replacement help

The video card on my old desktop went belly up this afternoon. I had a Radeon x1950 pro in it previously. (Mobo is an ASUS M2V) I'm researching how to replace it for a reasonable amount and have stumbled across this Radeon 6670 but figured I'd float by here and see if anyone knew of any extra good deals on video cards before I drop the ~$100 to get the one from the link above. Bonus kudos if someone knows of someone selling a Radeon HD 5770 for bitcoins. Must be in the US.

GPU and CPU upgrade

As many others did, I got a stimulus payment today. I also got a raise and a bonus on my last paycheck. So I'm looking to get some upgrades. I desperately need a new GPU. When I built my PC 2 years ago, I re-used my old graphics card because the bitcoin miners inflated the prices so high. So I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and GPU now.
Current specs:
650W gold rated PSU, 16GB DDR4, Ryzen 1500X, Geforce GTX 960 2GB. Monitor is 1080p 60hz, but I do plan on buying a high refresh rate monitor in the future.
I've already decided to upgrade the CPU to a 3600 or 3600X. That was an easy decision.
My main problem is I don't have enough VRAM for anything that's come out in the past year or so. I've been looking at mid range cards like the 5600XT and 1660 Super or 2060 RTX. The thing that concerns me, is those cards only have 6GB VRAM, and in the benchmarks I've watched, I see some games are already using over 5GB. With a new console generation launching soon, I'd imagine games are going to start using more VRAM. So I really want to go with 8GB. The other thing that concerns me, is I've only ever bought one video card from team red before. That was a Radeon HD 5770. I had nothing but problems with it. It would crash and blackscreen like every 10 minutes, and I reached out on the official forums, there were quite a few of us with the same issue. I waited for the driver to fix it, never got fixed, so I ended up buying a 560 TI. Now looking at the 5600XT and 5700, I'm hearing the AMD is still having driver issues. That's a shame, because they seem to be beating Nvidia in price to performance.
So now I'm considering a 2060 Super, but the price is making me hesitate.
So question is, what is the best graphics card to pair with my Ryzen 3600 upgrade?

Has anyone here ever generated a block solo mining?

I realize that even with today's bleeding-edge hardware, it's damn near impossible to do so and still have it be profitable. But I'm curious.
I'm relatively new to bitcoin, but I have some of the fundamentals down. I've almost gotten a whole BTC in my run (On and off since March) and with my hardware it will take me about 6 months to generate a block at current difficulty..
Also, what's your current mining hardware? I didn't build mine for mining but I have a Phenom II X6 1055T (1.5 Mhashes/s) and a Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 (177.5 Mhashes/s.)

Is It worth getting into Mining Right Now?

Im Considering getting into mining as a summer project/hobby and to potentially get some spare coin, and Im wondering if it is even worth it for my budget frame. Even though its a tad controversial, Im considering the BFL 5 Gh/s Miner because it doesn't seem to be too expensive for an asic, and seems like it would eventually produce some money. But I was also considering using 2 5770's for about the same price, albeit a much lower hash rate, but I would be able to get mining sooner. Are either of these a good idea/worth it? If its any help, I would be in a pool. Edit: forgot to add the 6770 to the list

For my mining rig's two year anniversary, I switched it over to Litecoin.

Story time:
About two years ago, I heard about this crazy new thing called Bitcoin and you could get them by running a program on your computer. This immediately intrigued me, but I didn't have much money and my computer had an Nvidia card it. (obviously terrible for mining)
Luckily, my friend had a Radeon 5770 he was willing to part with for only $20! So, I scrounged up some computer parts I had lying around and bought a few more and now I was the proud owner of a new mining rig that could process a whopping 215 Mh/s and churn out ฿0.1 per day. Since then, it has been mining pretty much non stop (I stopped for a month when BTC crashed to $2.50, now I wish I hadn't) and I have not really felt the need to upgrade it even though it seems to earn less all the time.
All told it cost me about $100 to build and it has earned me well over $300 and even payed for a BFL Jalapeño. But good things can't last forever and my profitability has dropped since ASICS have come online. I am hoping that Litecoin can let me continue mining for a little while longer, since it has been so much fun so far.
And here she is in all her glory: http://imgur.com/sXEENsz
TL;DR: Built a budget rig in 2011. It payed for itself and then some, and now it's mining Litecoins.
P.S. If anyone knows some good settings for a 5770 running CGMiner that would be much appreciated. I currently have it running at about 184 Kh/s.

Why is my reject rate on MtRed so high?

Hi:
I've been mining on the mining.bitcoin.cz pool for awhile, but a couple of days ago started to mine on MtRed. One thing that I've noticed is that my rate of rejected hashes on MtRed is much higher. During the past couple of days it was something like 2-3 times higher than the bitcoin.cz processes, but today it's nearly 10 times higher. On mining.bitcoin.cz I get about 1 rejected hash for every 40-50 accepted hashes, whereas on Mtred I get 1 rejected hash for every 5 or so accepted.
Why might it be so high? They're running on the same card (ATI 5770 OC'd to 940mhz) on phoenix. Does Mtred work in such a way that I'd need to change my settings? I'm using "DEVICE=1 VECTORS BFI_INT FASTLOOP=false AGGRESSION=6 -k phatk" on both pools.
Thanks all!

[BUILDING] Cheap Motherboard for 2x HD 5770?

EDIT: Got things mixed up, I was reading the components for a BTC mining rig! Now my question would be: What would be decent, but cheap components for a mining rig, built around 2x HD 5770? Stupid idea? Share your wisdom!
Hey guys, nice job on the subreddit! I've been thinking about building a rig for a while now, but started actually doing some research just today. Now I'm wondering what a decent but cheap motherboard would be for:
For all the other components I looked here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_rig#Three_ATI_5770s.2C_Approximately_630_Mhash.2Fs which are all pretty cheap components, except for the motherboard. Now in this example there are three cards used, which wont be neccesary for my setup.
All suggestions are welcome, I'm exited to start building/mining!
Edit: I should say I'm quite unfamiliar with computer parts in general, so if you have any tips on replacing other components in that list for cheapeother ones, or know a complete different, better rig, please say so.

Would it be worth mining bitcoins with a single ATi 5770?

Hey all, I have heard of bitcoins before but didn't really get into it. I, like many saw the mega thread discussing them over on /gaming yesterday and it peaked my interest. I am involved in other similar distributed computing projects like [email protected] and would like to get my feet wet with bitcoin mining. I just have a few questions.
  1. Would it be worth it mining with a single 5770 gpu? How much would I expect to make mining with it?
  2. Can I have my GPU mining and my CPU folding proteins at the same time? Would the GPU require some power from my CPU in order to mine or is it completely independent with no performance loss for my CPU folding proteins?
  3. How bandwidth intensive is it in terms of downloading and uploading blocks?
  4. How much would it cost to build a dedicated rig that would produce a decent amount of bitcoins without costing a fortune?
Thanks!

[WTS] 2 x ATI XFX 5770 video cards

I have two used XFX 5770's that I used for mining bitcoins. They are in good working order I just don't have a rig to run them in anymore.
I will accept $150USD (BTC equivalent) for each card or $250 USD (BTC equivalent) for both.
Buyer pays actual shipping.

cgminer 3.7.2 overheating my 5770. Do --temp-target or --temp-cutoff actually do anything?

I have an old HD 5770 which I thought I could pop some coins out of but I cannot get the mining software set up. I am running cgminer 3.7.2, and with default settings fresh from the install I get ~27kH/s but that seems low, others report ~130-190 with 5770's. When I try others suggested settings (seems mainly higher intensities) I get a boost to my hash rate but the card gets very hot and shoots up to over 90C in a minute or two and the safeties don't seem to kick in.
--auto-gpu with a temperature target seems like it should be ideal, but I cannot get it to hold any target temperatures.
Does --temp-cutoff do anything? I usually monitor the temperature with speedfan and shut it down when it hits mid 90's, cgminer does not seem to care about high temperature. I thought it had a default setting of 95 for the cutoff, am I mistaken?
Are there alternative programs for AMD mining with a pool? I cannot get guiminer to start, and most other programs only have documentation for bitcoin or litecoin.
I should add, I am passing these setting with the mine.bat file, I tried messing with the .conf file but it didn't seem to change any temperature settings either.
edit: Thanks for the help so far. I think my old .conf file might have been stopping my new temperature settings from being taken up. I got a "REST" status in the kH/s area when I hit the cutoff, but cgminer did not seem to pick up the trail again after the temperature dropped back to normal, it said it was reactivating but I just got that "stratum from pool detected new block message" over and over again. I really like cudaminer for the "yay!"s and such. I don't even know when I hash something in cgminer.

[Build Help] SLI/Crossfire GPU suggestions

Howdy BAPC :) I have an existing system which had a single GPU die, was a Radeon HD 5770. The system itself is just over 3 years old and performing well otherwise ( on a cheap vid card for now ). The motherboard supports both Crossfire and SLI, I have no allegiance either way to AMD or nVidia so I'm looking for suggestions on midrange SLI or Crossfire cards. I'd like to keep the price to around 200 per card if possible. I don't do a lot of heavy gaming nor am I going to be mining bitcoins but rather software security type stuff ( work related ).
So any ideas or suggestions you have would be awesome.
Cheers.

Had a spare video card, and decided to put it to work. But I'm a bit scared now. (Newbie to much of this)

Hello /BitcoinMining, nice to meet ya.
So I upgraded my video card recently, and I had an HD 5770 just lying around, not doing anything. Saw the BTC exchange rates going up again, so I figured why not put it back to work.
Problem is, the other video card is an NVidia, and it doesn't seem like they are playing as nicely together in my one machine as I'd like them too.
Also, when running GUIMiner for a while, the 5770 core temp is topping out at 107c, and I'm afraid of melting my machine.
And to top it off, I'm seeing low MHash/s (around 33 average) through GUIMiner's estimation, but I read threads left and right about 5770s reaching up to 200 MHash/s.
Am I doing something wrong, or is this because the hashes have become more difficult?
Or am I misunderstanding a lot?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Heh, well I'm glad I decided to play with the hardware further. When I noticed that the GPU was resting at ~75c, I thought something might be wrong. So with the intent of changing out the thermal paste on the card, I discovered that during storage time my 3 year old son must have dropped a screw into the cooling system. It was keeping the fan from turning... So now I rest at a nice 30-40c. Now I just need to get a good driver set that works best for mining and I am solid.

Help a newcomer wrap his head around a few things, please?

Hey All,
I've been hearing a ton about bitcoins in the last month, so about a week and a half ago when I finally wasn't working 18 hours a day, I sat down and spent a saturday researching the whole concept, the methods of mining, familiarizing myself with the different tools and workflows, etc. I started mining on my GTX670 which yields a lowley 87mh/s... but it's better than nothing. In the past week, I've accumulated a whopping sum of .07 bitcoins, and got slightly discouraged at the work that was going in to something to gain so little.
But, I've been watching this whole explosion happen in real time, and now I'm just as fascinated about the whole bitcoin concept as I was two weeks ago. I fired up a couple of 5770's I had laying around, and now I'm pulling around 350-450 mh/s all together, which is yielding much better results. The best part is, I don't pay for electricity (it's included in my rent) so I can leave these heat machines blasting 24/7. I realize now that I'm not mining for USD, I'm mining to accumulate coins that will be worth (hopefully) much much more in the future. Sadly, I have absolutely zero capital to invest in the coins by buying them, thanks to just recently graduating and my absurd student loans.
Basically, I was wondering what all of your favorite mining pools are? And what's better for my current situation, PayPerShare or Porportional? I'm currently mining for Eclipse, which employs the Double Geometric Scoring method. This was fantastic for the few blocks that only lasted 10min-1hr, but currently I'm mining on a block going on 13 hours and have the same estimated reward as a block that lasted 30min (.007bc), where if I was being paid per share, I would have made nearly .225bc.
Also, what are your opinions on the ASIC hardware that's coming out? I'm looking at purchasing a Butterfly Labs Jalapeno, which is only 150$ for 4.5gh/s. Again, electricity isn't an issue, and at the current rates that thing would make nearly $20/day. If I place an order now, I likely won't receive one till June, will mining still be relevant then, or is mining past its prime?
Sorry for the wall of text, I may have drank a little extra tonight after working another 19 hours... so I apologize if this post is a clusterfuck of questions.
Thanks!!

2 old AMD cards with Crossfire or 1 new card?

So I have a bitcoin rig I've been running for a year and a half that I've decided to turn into a gaming rig. It's no longer economically viable in terms of money generated for the power it uses, and also the woman I'm subletting my apartment from has been distraught over why the electric bill is 15x higher than when she lived there (power is included in the rent). I made a few bucks beyond breaking even so I'm not too upset about turning it off.
Anyway, I've picked up more RAM, an SSD and an AMD FX 8350 processor but haven't set up the parts yet. What I'm really wondering is whether I should sell 1 of the 3 AMD 5770's it has (worth around $30-50 on ebay I think) and use the other two with a crossfire setup, or if I should sell all the graphics cards and get one brand new card. Also, I'm on an unemployed-college-but-parents budget so I wouldn't want to have to spend too much more for the new card than what I'd get for selling the old ones. I don't really care about power consumption because it's not going to be on all the time and I don't pay for the power, I'm really just concerned with how good the performance will be with the two older cards versus one new card. And at the moment I game on a 5 year old laptop (hp dv7-1170us if you're curious) so I feel like either way I'll be amazed by the performance boost.
tl;dr How would crossfire performance with 2 AMD 5770's compare with 1 newer card in the ~$120-$150 price range?

Trying to tell my friends to do litecoins

Alright, So me and my mates decided to toy around with Mining. I'm doing litecoins but my friend is bent on trying to mine for bitcoins with his 5770 and 6870 both running in different pools. I'm trying to tell him he going to gross more money if he mines litecoins, but he thinks he will thinks he will get more money in the long wrong with bitcoins. What can I do to tell him its not that good of a idea?

Seeking tutorials/advice for an educational coin-mining project

I am seeking help finding tutorials for an educational coin-mining project
I am designing and overseeing a coin mining project for a small group of learners. We will be using the home computer hardware we have available at this time, but may be able to add more dedicated hardware as time goes on. We have access to ~$100/month in free [email protected] ~.22/hwh. Our location is naturally cool, we have to run an electric heater in the computer room on a daily basis anyway. The project will run for a minimum of 6 months, and a maximum of 2 years.
The main difficulty I'm encountering is that most tutorials are already outdated, and the few up-to-date tutorials are geared toward people with a lot of capitol to invest. Given that we're using very limited home computing hardware for this experiment, what altcoin should we mine, and which mining pool should we join? Which software should we use?
While our overall goal is education, we want to make a net profit, how ever small that may be. We have free electricity and will not be factoring in the cost of our existing home computer hardware. Think of it like a "lemonade stand": The goal is to learn about small business money management, not pay the rent. But if the lemonade stand loses money and requires subsidization from the parents, the kids aren't really learning how to make a net profit. If we make $0.05 more than we spend on hardware, it's a success.
Computer: CPU- AMD Phenom II X6 1050T, factory-overclocked to 3.2Ghz, with aftermarket aircooling in a well ventilated case GPU-ATX AMD Radeon 5770, currently running at stock speed.
The desktop is used for low-processor applications during the day like web browsing and running microsoft excel. It is used for aprox. 2 hours of GPU intensive computer gaming/day.
One rasberry pi with simcard, power supply, usb hubs, wifi, bluetooth, etc. Possibly use this to run USB bitcoin miners if we determine that we could make the investment on additional hardware back within 12 months.
Goals: Learn about coinmining by implementing a coinmining operation. Learn about mining pools Learn about hardware overclocking Learn about cryptography and hashing Learn about online currency trading Learn resource management Not lose money on investment on any new hardware purchased.
thanks in advance!

[Build Help] BitCoin Mining Rig

Hey guys, I'm looking to build a rig specifically for Bitcoin Mining but also looking at the possibility to game and run Eyefinity off of it.
That being said, I'm very budget conscious right now, I've been trading parts and am looking for options once I get some cash in the near future.
Motherboard:M3A32-MVP Deluxe/WiFi-AP
CPU: Thinking of going with whatever I find a good deal on, most likely a quad core Phenom II.
CPU Cooler: Corsair H50, already own it.
Hard Drive: I've got a pending trade for a Intel X25-M 160gb G2, looks like a pretty solid drive. Would it work in the aforementioned motherboard?
Memory:I'm not sure how much memory I should get. I know my mobo only supports DDR2, I'm hoping to go for at least 4gb, preferably 8gb, but it will depend on what I'm able to find. The guy I bought the motherboard from told me that AMD Cpu's currently have an issue with 4 sticks of memory, what do you guys think?
Video Card: No idea here since I'd like to be able to run as many as possible for mining. I'm hoping for 4 eventually, I'd like to start with 2 and give crossfire a try. This is going to be the most expensive part of my rig as 5850's are selling at a premium due to mining. Would I be able to run 4 5850's? I'm also considering 4 5770's due to current budge constraints but I'm leaning away from this right now. How would that work with this motherboard and what kind of power supply would I need?
Power Supply: No idea here at all, completely clueless due to the video card issue listed above.
Case: Had a deal going for a Coolermaster Cosmos but it fell through, any recommendations? Airflow is going to be a big issue here
I'm looking at used parts, preferably used XFX video cards since they offer double lifetime warranty and used memory since I'm not sure it matters that much. I've got an $80 Newegg Gift Card that I received for my birthday, planning on using that for a power supply or CPU since I don't feel that comfortable buying used in that category.
That being said, what are your opinions?
Thanks again for your time, Ignignoktt
